Jeremy Arden was moved to write his Songs from Hell in response to the persistent violence and intolerance that has erupted around the world in recent times. The texts are freely adapted from the Holocaust poems of Dan Pagis and from Buddhist writings, both sources perfectly capturing various aspects of the hell that humans create when consumed by hate. Composed in 2024 and comprising four brief songs, the work was first performed on 5 October in Oxford.

* THREE SUITES FOR HARPSICHORD *
|
Charles Noblet (1715–1769) was a leading keyboard player and teacher in mid-eighteenth-century Paris. He served as organist at several Parisian churches and became resident harpsichordist first at the school of singing attached to the Opera and finally for the Opera orchestra itself. As a composer he wrote chamber cantatas, several of which exist, and sacred vocal music. Although none of his organ music was published, in 1757 he brought out a collection of keyboard music, comprising three suites for harpsichord and three sonatas scored for harpsichord plus ‘accompanying’ violin, and this, fortunately, has survived.

These little-known suites are in the tradition of Rameau’s Nouvelles Suites de pièces de clavecin. Their attractive and colourful pieces are very varied in content, with many original and piquant touches. Largely French in style and containing the usual mixture of dance movements and character pieces, they occasionally betray Italian influence, including the hand-crossing popularized by Scarlatti.

|
Den lille danserinnen (‘The Little Ballerina’) evokes a charming, gracious, light-footed dancer, while Nocturne makes the piano sing in the romantic tradition. Both these delightful short pieces would be ideal encores!
